The homeowner was wanting to improve the look of the property as the roof tiles had become discoloured with lichens and thick moss.

The Cost of Ignoring a Mossy Roof

Like so many of the roof cleaning jobs we carry out, the mosses and lichens had caused some damage to the existing roof tiles. If you allow mosses to grow unchecked on your roof, eventually they will cause damage to the slates or roof tiles.

Many people ignore the moss growth because they mistakenly believe that it doesn’t do any harm.  The truth of the matter is rather different.    Moss sucks up water and holds onto it.  Mosses have a root system that essentially digs down into the porous materials of roof tiles. As the seasons change and freezing temperatures arrive, the moss freezes, as the water contained in the moss freezes it expands, causing micro-damage to your roof tiles.  Over time this leads to fully cracked and broken tiles, which can come loose and become dangerous.  Falling roof tiles could be potentially fatal.
