A Complete Exterior Cleaning Transformation

We were asked to clean a large detached home with a particularly complex roof. With multiple pitches, hips, valleys and extensions, this was certainly not a small or straightforward roof cleaning job.

Over the years, the concrete roof tiles had developed significant moss, algae and lichen growth. This had left the roof looking dull, patchy and considerably older than it actually was.

Once the work was completed, the difference was striking. The original colour and appearance of the concrete tiles could be seen again, giving the whole property a much cleaner and better-maintained appearance.

Moss, Algae and Lichen Removal from Concrete Roof Tiles

One of the main objectives of this roof cleaning project in Derby was to remove the years of organic growth that had accumulated across the roof.

Moss can become particularly noticeable on concrete roof tiles, especially on areas that receive less direct sunlight or remain damp for longer periods. Lichen and algae can also become established, resulting in discolouration across large areas of the roof.

For this property, our work included:

• Full roof cleaning
• Moss, algae and lichen removal
• Anti-fungal treatment designed to provide protection for approximately 3 to 4 years
• Ridge repointing throughout
• Replacement of a cracked roof tile
• Repair of split lead flashing using Flashband
• Fascia and soffit cleaning
• Window and door frame cleaning
• Block paving cleaning using pressure washing and sodium hypochlorite treatment

This meant the customer received far more than a cosmetic roof clean. Several maintenance issues were identified and addressed while we were carrying out the work.

Roof Cleaning Helped Us Identify Potential Problems

An important part of this particular roof cleaning job in Derby was what we discovered once the moss and surface contamination had been removed.

Thankfully, there was only one broken roof tile, which we were able to replace. However, a significant amount of ridge pointing required attention.

We also discovered a large split in the lead flashing.

This was particularly important because damaged flashing can allow rainwater to penetrate vulnerable areas of a roof. Left unnoticed, the split had the potential to cause a leak and possibly lead to more expensive repairs inside the property.

We repaired the affected area using Flashband, helping to protect the roof from water ingress.

It is a good example of why professional roof cleaning can offer benefits beyond appearance. Once heavy moss and organic growth have been removed, previously hidden defects can sometimes become much easier to identify.

Cleaning the Rest of the Property

The roof was the main focus of the project, but we also carried out additional exterior cleaning to give the property a more complete transformation.

Fascias, soffits, window frames and door frames were cleaned to remove accumulated dirt and weather staining.

We also cleaned the block paving using pressure washing combined with sodium hypochlorite treatment. This helped tackle the staining and organic growth that had developed across the paved areas.

By cleaning the roof and surrounding exterior surfaces at the same time, we were able to achieve a much more noticeable improvement to the overall appearance of the property.

The Finished Roof Cleaning Results

The customer was delighted with the finished result.

Years of moss, algae, lichen and general weathering had significantly changed the appearance of the roof. Following cleaning and treatment, the concrete tiles looked dramatically different, giving the property a much fresher appearance without the cost and disruption of replacing a perfectly serviceable roof.

More importantly, we had also identified and dealt with the cracked tile, deteriorating ridge pointing and split lead flashing.

The result was not simply a cleaner roof. The customer was left with a roof that looked considerably better and had received some important maintenance at the same time.
